4 Best Article Correction and Update Services for 2026

Corrections are the outcome nobody asks for and editors grant most often. That asymmetry is the single most useful thing to know about news reputation work.

People ask for deletion, get refused, and stop. Meanwhile the request that was always available, fix the error or record the outcome, would have been considered on its merits by someone whose professional identity is built on accuracy.

Our main guide sorts firms by outcome. This page is the middle outcomes specifically, and the four companies that pursue them.

What a newsroom will actually do

Four things, in descending order of how readily they are granted.

An update note. A line added recording what happened since publication: charges dropped, case dismissed, claim settled, company cleared. Easy to grant because nothing published was wrong, and it is frequently the most valuable outcome because it changes what a reader concludes.

A correction. A stated error is fixed and usually acknowledged. Granted where you can document it, and refused where you are disputing characterization rather than fact.

Anonymization. Your name replaced with initials or removed while the article stands. Harder, and increasingly granted for old routine coverage of non-public figures. This is the outcome that solves the practical problem most completely, because the article stops appearing on your name.

Unpublishing. Rare, and covered in our tier one guide.

Most people want the fourth and would be satisfied by the third.

The difference between an error and a characterization

This distinction decides whether your request succeeds, and it is where most self-made requests fail.

An error is checkable against a document. The article says you were convicted and the docket says the charges were dismissed. It states a figure and the filing shows another. It names you as a director and the register shows you resigned two years earlier.

A characterization is an interpretation. The article calls the deal troubled, describes a departure as abrupt, or frames a dispute in terms you would not have chosen. Newsrooms defend these, correctly, because they are editorial judgments rather than facts.

Write down the sentence you object to. If you cannot attach a document that contradicts it, you are asking for a rewrite rather than a correction, and no firm on this page changes that.

Send it yourself first

Free, and it works often enough on genuine errors that paying before trying makes no sense.

Write to the editor rather than the reporter. One screen. Name the specific sentence, attach the document, and say what you are asking for: correction, update note, or anonymization, in that order. Say plainly that you are not asking for the article to be unpublished, which removes the objection the editor is preparing.

Do not threaten. A legal threat routes your email to counsel and ends the editorial conversation, which is the one you wanted.

Check the outlet’s corrections policy first and cite it. Most publications have one, and citing their own process is more persuasive than anything you can argue.

The four

Company Type Anonymization Billing
National Security Law Firm Law firm Named service 3,000 per item, refunded on failure
Minc Law Law firm Via legal route Retainer
Guaranteed Removals Agency Case by case Pay after results
Reputation Flare Agency Case by case Quote

National Security Law Firm

Washington DC, working across all 50 states, at a flat 3,000 dollars per article refunded in full if the content is not removed or de-indexed.

The only firm in our data that names anonymization and article updating as services rather than treating them as fallbacks from removal. That framing matters, because a firm that presents the middle outcomes as legitimate objectives will pursue them properly instead of using them to explain a failure to delete.

Attorney client privilege also lets a correction request be made off the record, which is worth real consideration when the recipient is a newsroom that could treat your request as a story.

Minc Law

Cleveland, founded 2018, litigating in 26 states and 5 countries with more than 200,000 pieces of content removed.

The relevant capability is the assessment. Whether a statement is a false statement of fact or a defensible characterization is a legal question, and getting it wrong wastes months. A firm that runs defamation cases weekly will tell you in one call which side of that line your sentence falls on, and their free case review is worth having even if you never engage them.

They are clear that the route requires falsity rather than unflattering framing, which is the correct filter and the reason to trust the answer.

Guaranteed Removals

Canadian, since 2009, covering news alongside search results, reviews and personal information on pay after results terms.

The commercial structure needs care on this specific outcome. If a correction is obtained and the article stays, is that a result you pay for? It should be, because it is real work with real value, but a contract written around removal alone does not say so. Settle it before starting, in both directions.

Reputation Flare

Ours, so read it as advocacy.

We ask for the correction, the update note and the de-index together rather than sequentially, because an editor refusing one will often grant another and three separate emails is three chances to be filed as a nuisance. We also ask you to send your own letter first, since a refusal in your own words gives us something to work with and occasionally makes us unnecessary.

Against us: no published pricing, a thin independent review record, and we are not a law firm, so the falsity assessment above is a referral rather than something we can give you.

Why the update note is undervalued

An article reporting that you were charged, with a line at the top recording that charges were dismissed, tells a reader the whole story. Most readers who reach it will take away the resolution rather than the accusation.

That is close to the practical outcome of deletion, at a fraction of the difficulty, and it is available in situations where nothing else is. It is also durable in a way suppression is not, because it does not need maintaining.

If a firm treats the update note as a consolation prize, they have misunderstood what you are buying.

Before you spend anything

  1. Write down the exact sentence you say is wrong.
  2. Find the document that contradicts it. One sentence, one document.
  3. If you cannot, you are asking for a rewrite and the answer will be no.
  4. If you can, write to the editor yourself and cite their corrections policy.
  5. Only if refused, take the refusal and the document to one of the four above.

The guides have the letter wording. If you are unsure whether you have an error or a characterization, send us the sentence and we will tell you before you spend anything on it.
